ssWhat is a dental implant?
Dental implants are root replacements made of titanium.    A post is inserted into this titanium root and then a crown (the part of the tooth you see) is cemented onto the post.

What are the benefits of a dental implant?

A dental implant can provide renewed self-confidence in one’s personal and professional relationships.  They look, feel, and function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat anything and smile confidently.  It helps preserve facial structure and a youthful appearance.  Dental implants are not susceptible to cavities.

I am very anxious about my mouth and teeth, what can you suggest?
Dr. Kaufman is licensed by the State of California to perform IV conscious sedation.  Conscious sedation allows us to complete treatment while the patient is comfortably sedated.  You have no concept of time while under sedation, so long appointments seem to fly by.  You also have little or no recollection of the appointment once the sedation wears off.  This is a great option for anxious patients.

Why should missing teeth be replaced?

Dental implants promote the maintenance of the shape of your youthful face, smile, and self-esteem. Dental implants stimulate bone cells to continue normal function, keeping the jaw bone and gum tissue from collapsing.  If not replaced, bone loss can occur, causing the face to shrink unattractively.

Who should get a dental implant?

Almost anyone at any age is a candidate for a dental implant.  A candidate is anyone who has lost one or more teeth due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, or traumatic injury

How long will it last?

Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly cared for.

How many procedures are involved in getting a dental implant?

Two appointments are required.  The first appointment places the titanium root in the jaw bone.  The second appointment places the post and new tooth.

How long does it take to get my new tooth?

It depends on the tooth being replaced.  An upper tooth generally takes between 4 and 6 months.  A lower back tooth takes between 3 and 4 months.  A lower front tooth can be replaced in as little as 1 month.

Can I get a same-day dental implant?

Same-day dental implants can be done under certain circumstances.  Dr. Kaufman will inform you if this is possible.  They can be done on a lower front tooth or teeth that have short roots.

Does getting a dental implant hurt?

No.  Soreness is generally very mild.  Patient testimonies have reported discomfort is minimal and managed easily with Tylenol.  Sedation during the procedure is available.
